T1 6-9p.m. W Main April 10 $59 Crisis Response: New 988 Suicide and Crisis Line (MGT 3806) Every year, millions of mental health or suicidal crisis call are made to 911. Law enforcement officers — not a mental health professional — are often the only in-person response available, frequently resulting in tragic and deadly confrontations with law enforcement; admission to emergency rooms or inpatient psychiatric facilities harmful to the person; or unnecessary arrest and transport to jail and on-going involvement in the criminal justice system. This one-day workshop will explore in detail the new 988 hotline. This three-digit emergency number is intended to replace the current 911 system, which in 2016, resulted in a quarter of all people subjected to fatal police shootings nationwide being those with behavioral health or substance use conditions. The goal of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is to provide immediate crisis intervention and support. Law enforcement, legal and community advocates, mental health professionals, educators and those affected by mental illness and their families will gain substantive and procedural knowledge with respect to the safe and peaceful resolution of mental health crises that arise regarding individuals and families within neighborhoods and communities in Illinois.
