7 COMMUNITY & CONTINUING EDUCATION CAREER TRAINING Health Care Phlebotomy Technician Training (SAF 3800) Gain hands-on experience during this 60-hour course, which consists of lectures, discussions, skills practice and tests, written exams and a clinical experience to provide students adequate preparation to be hired as an entry- level phlebotomist. Lab time will be provided to develop skills in venipuncture and skin puncture techniques as well as specimen processing. A supervised, 120-hour clinical experience allows students to further develop the competencies needed to become a phlebotomist. Students will attend one, three- week rotation within the nine weeks following the last day of class. Successful completion of the classroom and clinical experience provides eligibility to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification exam. A mandatory orientation will be held prior to the first day of class. Costs not included: textbook, AHA BLS CPR Certification, uniform, health and safety requirements needed before clinical externship, certification exam and drug screening. Students learn to become a necessary member of the health care team, supporting dental practitioners in procedures leading to patients’ optimal dental health. Instruction in the classroom is supported with in-class laboratory instruction as well as an optional clinical experience to apply classroom and laboratory skills in a real-world setting following successful completion of the twelve-week program. Students will gain background knowledge and skills necessary for quality patient care in traditional general dentistry settings as well as the specialties. An emphasis on anatomy, morphology, physiology, infection control, radiology, and chairside dental procedures allows students to gain insight into topics applicable to the entry level NELDA and DANB CDA exams, credentials that enhance the pathway toward becoming a dental assistant, but that are not required in Illinois. More course topics include: roles of dental team members, ethics and law, medical emergency management, as well as oral pathologies and pharmacology. Students will also learn the daily management of dental practice with topics in basic treatment room preparation, communication, and business office support. This program prepares students to sit for the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) Certified Registered Central Service Technician exam.
