Since then, CERTs have been established in many communities throughout the nation, including Joliet. CERT training promotes a partnership between emergency services and the citizens, schools and businesses they serve. The goal is for CERT to train members in basic preparedness and response skills. CERT members are then integrated into the emergency response capability for their area. If a disastrous event overwhelms or delays emergency response capabilities, CERT members can assist others within their area by applying the basic response and organizational skills that they have learned through their training. The knowledge and skills gained through CERT training may help to save lives and property following a disaster until professional rescuers arrive. CERT skills may also be applied to daily emergencies. CERT members maintain and refine their skills by participating in exercises and activities and may serve the community and college in a variety of ways. This course is a great opportunity for JJC students who aim to serve the college and the community as volunteers. While open to all, this course will benefit those seeking employment in fire science, emergency medical services, nursing and law enforcement fields. For ages 18 and up.
