Together, pet owners and animals will develop mutual understanding. In order to help their pets learn appropriate behavior and to help them regain control, owners will train their animals together and make necessary corrections. Beginning with basic commands like sit, stay, down, come, walking on a leash and developing social skills, the training moves on to working in a setting that includes everyday noises, food, walkers and wheelchairs. Teams will be ready for the AKC CGC exam with these exercises, which also serve as a requirement for many organizations that support therapy dogs. On the last day of training, the instructor will administer certificate testing for AKC, CGC, and CGCA. All participants who pass will get paperwork to register for the Good Citizen Certificate with the AKC. (For the CTC processing, AKC will charge $10, and for the CGCA processing, $20. The owner is in charge of sending the paperwork and payment to the AKC.) Only dogs who are beginners or advanced can benefit from this class. Family members are welcome, but please, each dog should only have one handler. Note that dogs with aggressive behavior issues should not take this course. Dogs who exhibit excessive aggression towards humans or other dogs will not be allowed to continue with the course. Please Note: This class will run concurrently with the S.T.A.R. Puppy class.
