These funds support financial aid programs, workforce training, student services and infrastructure improvements, helping students succeed while strengthening local economies. Federal grants provide essential resources for career counseling, mental health services and support programs for first-generation and low-income students. Additionally, investments in technology and facilities enhance learning experiences, ensuring students are prepared for in-demand careers. Federal Pell Grant Summary The Pell Grant program provides financial aid to eligible undergraduate students who haven’t earned a bachelor’s degree. It’s a needs-based grant with eligibility determined by a formula from the U.S. Department of Education. Factors include financial information, cost of attendance, enrollment status and academic year length. The maximum award for 2022- 23 was $6,895, and about 3 million community college students receive Pell Grants each year. In 2022, Rep. Lauren Underwood (IL-14) chose the JJC Entrepreneur and Business Center — alongside 14 other projects — to benefit the 14th district. The funding has expanded the EBC’s capacity to provide no-cost services to new and existing entrepreneurs through education and training to help them build their companies.
